Pacific Coast Highway 1 is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of September and we intend to check out the newly paved roads that lead to Big Sur, California. We invite you to cruise with us in VW style on this classic West Coast cruise as we meander North from VSW Headquarters in Costa Mesa with overnight stops at Carpenteria, San Simeon (at the base of Hearst Castle), Kirk Creek, and Fernwood Campground in the heart of Big Sur.
Slow travel with experienced Vdub guides... we are local folks with local knowledge of the environs who know how to lead you to the best of the best sites and sounds. Journey with famous Rock n' Roll photographer and Chef/Restauranteur Eddie Caraeff who will be found at the grill n' bar, and with hosts Diamond D and Vintage Bill at the helm.
DAY 1 :: Depart Costa Mesa, Cruise Highway 1 through Malibu, Carpinteria State Beach [evening destination]. OPTION :: Group dinner at Sly's.
DAY 2 :: San Simeon [evening destination] by way of Morro Bay, and Cambria. Dinner provided.
DAY 3 :: Kirk Creek Campground - Big Sur [evening destination] by way of Ragged Point. Dinner and breakfast provided.
DAY 4 & 5 :: Fernwood Campground - Big Sur [evening destination 2 nights]. One dinner and one breakfast provided. [Explore Big Sur - Nepenthe, Ventana, hidden beaches].
DAY 6 :: Cambria :: Black Barn Inn [evening destination], accommodation included. OPTION :: Farm to Table Dinner accompanied by local wines.
DAY 7 :: Santa Barbara :: Private residence campout overlooking Santa Barbara and the sea beyond. BBQ Dinner provided by restauranteur Anton.
DAY 8 :: Drive Highway 150 via Ojai [through heavenly scented orange groves - perfect bus road], Highway 1 south costal cruise [possible stop at Neptune's Net for a nosh (depending on timing), returning to Costa Mesa early evening.
WHEN: Your adventure embarks from Vintage Surfari Wagons in Costa Mesa, CA on the morning of Monday, October 15th at 8 am and will be returning from Santa Barbara early evening, Monday, October 22nd.

WHAT'S INCLUDED: Provided in the cost is an 8 day rental of a classic VW Campervan, bedding pack, down duvet, camp chairs, kitchen galley kit, firewood, camp fees, travel snack box, 4 impressive evening meals, 2 robust breakfasts, campfire goodies, and a smattering of signature cocktails, all lovingly fabricated by our VSW crew. One nights stay at The Black Barn and a stay at a private residence in Santa Barbara on our last night together. Oh and of course, your very own bus whisperer Vintage Bill. He'll be more than happy to answer any and all VDub queries, but most importantly he'll keep us all rolling on down the road.
MEALTIMES/PROVISIONS: Menus will reflect a healthy California cuisine, Vegetarian friendly with Mexican influences. We will sample wines from the regions that we are passing through.
A communal grill and camp kitchen will be available for all bus participants to use while we are on the road. We have discovered that our campers seem to prefer to pitch in, sharing meals and sometimes clean-up, making the group camp experience a rich one.
We'll make stops strategically along our route so that everyone can purchase personal provisions.
OPTIONS: If you'd like to add more nights to your journey either at the beginning or at the end please ask, or if you have your own bus and want to join in let us know. We aim to please and nothing is out of the question.
We'll also be adding the option of participating in a group dinner at Sly's in Carpenteria on our first night out and a Farm to Table dinner at the Black Barn in Cambria, complete with local wines (prices for OPTIONS will depend upon participation).

NEAREST AIRPORT: John Wayne International Airport (SNA) is only 15 minutes away from VSW headquarters in Costa Mesa! If you'd rather land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), you'll be about 50 minutes away (depending on traffic). There are several shuttle options from LAX, please check with us and we can recommend the best option.
