VDUB TRAVEL TIP #316: Just Do It!
VDUB FACTOID: Edward Aikau was a well loved Hawaiian lifeguard who saved over 500 people. Not one life was lost while he served as lifeguard, often braving waves that reached 30 feet high or more. He was also famous for surfing and in 1977 Eddie won the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship. In 1978 Eddie was a member of a canoe crew journeying from the Hawaiian Islands to the Tahitian Islands. During this voyage, their vessel leaked and capsized. After becoming concerned they would not be rescued, Eddie made the decision to go for help and set out paddling on his surfboard – a 12 mile trip to shore. He was never seen again. Today, Eddie is remembered for his bravery and courage, for being someone who was willing to put himself into harm’s way for the sake of others. As a result, the phrase “Eddie would go!” has become a mantra for surfers around the world.
