Vintage Surfari Wagons began in 2005 with a simple idea and two classic Bay Window Volkswagen camper vans. What started as a small passion project quickly grew into something much bigger. Over the next 21 years, Diane and Bill Staggs built one of the most respected vintage VW camper rental businesses in the country—eventually expanding the fleet to 27 fully outfitted vintage campers.

During that time, Vintage Surfari Wagons sent thousands of intrepid travelers from around the world on unforgettable private camper van adventures throughout Southern California and beyond. Guests came from across the globe to experience the freedom, nostalgia, and connection that only a vintage VW camper can provide. Long before “van life” became mainstream, Vintage Surfari Wagons was helping define it.

As pioneers in the vintage RV and VW camper rental space, Diane and Bill continually evolved the business. In addition to private camper hires, they introduced fully curated camping tours, offering thoughtfully planned, immersive travel experiences. As demand grew, so did their expertise—leading to the expansion into restoration, repair, and mechanical services, maintaining not only their own fleet but advising countless owners along the way.

After more than two decades of growth, stewardship, and community-building, Diane and Bill made the decision to wrap up rental and restoration operations in late 2025, closing that chapter with gratitude and pride.

Today, Vintage Surfari Wagons has evolved once again—this time into a focused vintage Volkswagen consultation service. Drawing on decades of hands-on experience, we now help buyers, owners, and enthusiasts navigate pre-purchase decisions, troubleshoot mechanical issues, review repair estimates, and better understand their vehicles. Our goal remains the same as it was in 2005: to support meaningful, rewarding vintage VW ownership through honesty, experience, and trusted guidance.
